Overview of EU environmental legislation – Part I

The European environmental legislation overview consists from three parts: first is concern on various waste and hazardous waste directives mainly; second part shows legislation connected with hazardous substances, development control and about accessing to information on the environment and the last part is about Integrated Product Policy and Eco-Design of Energy-using Products. The Information, where to find more information about environmental legislation and EC legal acts was shown at the end of each presentation.

Part I of the European legislation overview is divided on the topics: EU legislative processes, waste legislation, air pollution legislation, effl uent and water legislation and also shows where to find information about environmental legislation. The first topic explains in brief the main European Union legislation instruments and principles. Next the general information and remarks connected with EU directives and regulations concern each topic are presented. The “waste legislation” topic covers: Framework Directive on Waste (2006/12/EC), Directive on hazardous waste (91/689/EEC), Decision 2000/532/EC shows list of wastes, Regulation No 1013/2006 on shipments of waste and also the directives 94/62/EEC and 2005/20/EC on Packaging Waste and very important directive 2002/96/EC on WEEE.

The “air pollution legislation” topic covers: information what have infl uence on air pollution legislation and presents some of the EU legal acts - Framework Directive on ambient air quality assessment and management (96/62/EEC) and her daughter directives: 1999/30/EC, 2000/69/EC and 2002/3/EC. Also were shown the Directive 2008/50/EC on ambient air quality and cleaner air for Europe and Regulation EC/2037/2000 on substances that deplete the ozone layer.

The last topic of part I, “effluent and water legislation”, covers such EU directives as: the 76/464/EEC and 2006/11/EC on dangerous substances discharges; the 2000/60/EC on framework for Community action in the fi eld of water policy and the 2006/118/EC on Groundwater as also the Directive 91/271/EEC concerning urban waste water treatment.
