Registration Evaluation Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals Directive, Restriction of the use of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment Directive

The REACH regulation came into force from 1st June 2007. As this acronym stands for Registration Evaluation Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals it’s main field of interest are chemicals. Incorporation of this regulation affected more then 40 other regulations.

Coming into force one regulation about chemicals was mentioned to be helpful for exchanging information about substances and for inner market. It manages not only chemicals, dangerous for human beings, but also this regulation takes care for environment. Impact that substance have on both human being and environment should be examined. Main aim of this regulation is the substitution of the dangerous chemicals, for not harmful ones. Also economical and social benefi ts are monitored during this incorporation of “exchange” chemicals. The limit for the amount from which substance has to registered is 1 ton per year. The amount beneath this threshold is treated as research and development or other test purposes.

Almost all chemicals that will be incorporated on the market, above the threshold are under the scope of this regulation. There are exemptions, because they have different regulations, which will be mentioned during this presentation. Exemptions are chemicals that are used for: medicinal products for human or veterinary, cosmetic products, medical devices which are invasive and food or feeding.

The role of ECHA (European Chemical Agency) will be described it’s role in registration and preregistration. Benefits from registration and obligation and the timeline of the forthcoming activities that will come will be presented.
